Easter Table

For those of you who religiously (see what I did there) follow the liturgical calendar Holy Week starts this coming Sunday with Palm Sunday.  (I’m a preacher’s kid… its hard to get away from the church calendar!) Easter is one of my favorite times a year… spring is in full swing, its time to spend more time outside, flowers are blooming… and don’t forget Easter candy. And although I know Easter is definitely about more than bunnies and candy, it is the one time a year I decorate with any sort of pastels (I’m a bold kind of person), and I kinda like the change for a short while.

So this weekend I decided to decorate my dining table to get me in the Easter spirit.

Most years my mom gives us a little Easter basket.  Most of the things she gave us growing up are part of her Easter decorations now (which by the way is genius… give kids gifts you actually want to use as decor… BRILLIANT)  but I have a few that she has given me as an adult that fit right into my table theme.  The runner and plates were part of a line from Williams Sonoma a few years ago but they’ve switched their lineup this year.

I took this picture before I’d picked up the rest of my Easter Candy… so those other two silver bowls are now filled with pastel M&Ms.  You can use your imagination right? (and lets be honest… M&Ms don’t last long in my house so its not like they’ll be full for long!)

My family usually dyes and hunts Easter eggs and then has a big Easter Sunday Lunch, so a nicely decorated table definitely gets me thinking about delicious food and fun family time!

I love the blue tint of the water glasses.  That is actually a set my older brother bought his wife because she liked them so much at a restaurant.  My mom liked my sister in law’s so much that my brother bought her some too.  Now my twin brother and I both have sets and we bought a close friend a set of her own because she liked them so much!!

Are y’all ready for Easter?

Paper Dot Garland

When we started planning the shower for my brother and his fiancee, I went where I always go for inspiration… PINTEREST!! I had been seeing these cute paper dot garlands around the web and thought they would be perfect for the shower! (the picture below was my inspiration, but whoever pinned it originally didn’t put a link the original site… after some googling you can go here if you want to see the rest of that party)

Pom poms and matching garland.

So although this was about the complete opposite of our color scheme, this was our inspiration pic! But of course I had never made a paper garland before, but it looked like they were just sewn on a sewing machine… so I gave it the old college try! And you better believe you will see more of these at my parties!! IT WAS SOOOOO EASY (and quick and cheap… can’t beat that!).

I bought this guy at Joann’s with a 40% off coupon (seriously if you ever shop at there or Hobby Lobby, download their apps for coupons, they ALWAYS have a 40% off or more coupon!).  I think it cost me about $9.

I also bought 6 sheets of cardstock paper (and I swear those two gold sheets are the same, but they look very different here!):

And then I had a date with my couch and Modern Family, so I cut out all my dots

dotgarland5

I made them as close to each other as possible, going around the edge of the paper, then cut off the scraps and kept going on the inner square.  And about one episode later (don’t you love projects you can measure in episodes watched??) I had this:

Now the really complicated part (here is where I need a sarcasm font): lay them out in the order you want

dotgarland7

And feed them through your sewing machine one by one.  I had my foot pushed down about medium speed and would just wait until the dot before it was just past the needle and would stick the second dot in, that left about an 1/16th of an inch in between each dot.  But since my coordination skills leave a bit to be desired, some have wider spaces than others.  And ladies and gentlemen, we call that character.

The only other note I have is to leave some extra string at the beginning and end so that you will have something to hang them from.

dotgarland1

And there my friends you have awesome color coordinated decorations for less that $5. (not counting the dot puncher since by the time I’m done making these for every party from now on the cost per garland will be negligible!)  But that’s enough finance talk… lets take a look at the final product shall we!?

And because I had a few extra gold ones I added them as a garland for the cheesecake

Lead Paint PSA

If you’ve been hanging around the blog for a while you know that I really love making over furniture and have several pieces passed down from my grandmother.  The awesome thing about this is I get quality furniture for the low low price of FREEEEEE.  The only downside is that some of those pieces have lead paint. I think a lot of people know that lead paint is bad, but it isn’t something DIY-ers always remember when picking up a piece of old furniture.

A while ago I bought some cute old window frames at a garage sale that I wanted to do something cool with (like this or this), but they’ve been sitting in my garage because I suspected they they had some lead paint on them and because I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do with them.  To read more about lead paint, go here.

So my first step was to figure out if it was lead paint.  So I picked up one of these little guys from Home Depot:

leadpaint1

Its a pretty easy test… you squeeze in the center to break the little thing inside of the cardboard, then wipe it on the paint in question (if there are several layers of paint you need to cut through them so they are all swabbed by the cotton.   And now comes the results… red is lead.  And sure enough…

These windows definitely have lead paint.  So my next step will be stripping the leftover paint with a paint stripper intended for lead paint removal like this and be sure to use a respirator and gloves! And then of course, figure out something fun to do with them!
